What is smart technology?
Smart technology refers to the use of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and big data to interconnect objects that would previous have existed in isolation, allowing for effective monitoring of infrastructure beyond IT. This concept is related to now well-established Internet of Things, offering organisations access to a 'big picture' overview of their infrastructure, while introducing numerous opportunities for enhancing security, reducing costs, and allowing for more environmentally friendly operations. In this way, organisations are able to categorically position themselves as green companies, with deep commitment to corporate social responsibility.
Potential applications of this technology include:
- Smart cities. A city where multiple types of sensor are used to automate data collection and optimise the use of available resources, while simultaneously putting a range of conveniences at residents' fingertips.
- Smart buildings. Interconnecting multiple systems within a building to ensure resources are consumed on an as-needed basis, while streamlining, centralising and optimising security processes, such as CCTV and access control.
- Smart homes. Automation of utilities, and integrated security systems, allowing residents to maintain full control of their energy consumption, while enjoying complete peace of mind that their homes are secure.
